Post storm garden report

This year we’ve had a lot of goals about what and how we eat. One of the main goals was to increase what we grew in our plots at the 8th and I community garden to produce all of our vegetables for the fall, winter and spring. We had a Zestful Gardens share for the summer, so we used our space to grow kale, chard, carrots, beets, parsnips and other vegetables that could over-winter well. Until of course, the terrible storm of ’08 came.

We were out of town for most of Christmas, so we didn’t get to find out how the garden fared until a few days after the snow had melted. And overall – we got good news! We lost a few things: most of the arugula, watercress, cauliflower, a few extra small cabbages and the greens of our beets are no longer appetizing.

But here’s what made it through: kale, chard, beets, carrots, parsnips, cabbages, green onions, herbs, turnips, sprouting broccoli, kohlrabi, mache, miner’s lettuce and under our Reemay-covered tunnels all of our baby lettuces and spinach made it, including new tiny seedlings!

Does anyone have something surprising that did or didn’t make it through the snow? Any great vegetables everyone should be growing next winter?
