My Strawberries Water Themselves!

Jul 4, 08:00 AM by Alicia

I stopped by the Westover Farm of Maple Valley booth at the Broadway Farmers market the other week and bought a hanging strawberry plant (it’s all they had left, three of them, as they’d sold out of their tomatoes before noon). A cool bonus: They water themselves! The strawberries came in a special pot that lets you put a bunch of water in the bottom and the plant just wicks up the water as it needs it. So, I guess I still have to water it, but just less frequently … and no worries about over-watering. And the plant is already sporting little green berries that have me glad this container is out of the children’s reach …

Also, the folks at Westover Farm are super-nice. And not only did I get instructions on how to care for my plant through summer and winter and into next year, but I even got a mini plant propogation lesson as I made my purchase. Holy berries! Apparently, when the strawberry plant begins to shoot runners, which this kind does, all I have to do is clip off the runners, stick them in some water until they begin to “root” and then I can stick them in a new container and have more strawberry plants. Sweet! (Literally.)

Anyone want plant starts later this summer/fall?

You can also stick those strawberry runners in the ground and begin a strawberry bed. My dad made a huge strawberry bed on the side of our first house and it was so much fun to pick berries there in the summer.
