Momma and Poppa Birds

May 19, 12:19 PM by JP

Okay, gardening is great and all and I love watching my planted seeds sprout and flourish, but it’s also great just to have an excuse to be outside, face to face with the rugged outdoors of my backyard. While digging in my garden last week I watched momma and poppa birds fly to and fro from a hole in our house (what it’s from I do not know). I first became aware of these birds and there chirping offspring while using the bathroom and thinking we had some bizarre infestation in our wall. When I mentioned it to a housemate he informed me of the birdhouse in our wall. So I took a break from pulling weeds to watch the mom and dad fly in and out of the hole above our toilet, saying hello to their little ones. Then, another smaller bird dropped in for a visit, poked his head in and eventually left. He probably realized he had the wrong address. Embarrassing.

On the theme of bird watching while gardening, I was at the La Grande Garden on G St. (which is administered to by the Guadalupe Land Trust) last week, tilling up some soil for a friend and watched as the birds all swooped in to gobble up the newly unearthed worms. It felt like the equivalent of a lunch buffet, all that food just sitting there for the taking.

It may seem a little silly, but before I began gardening I stayed indoors more. But it’s nice to have something on hand that gets me out of cyber space and into nature, even it is just my own backyard.
