Tasty Tomatoes!

Sep 9, 09:34 AM by Claire

This past fall, we started our square foot gardening experiment and have been blessed with many delicious, colorful veggies. The prize crop (rated mostly on size) has been our tomatoes. We planted 6 tomato plants this year and each plant has grown taller than 6 feet! I hope the weather will hold long enough to see all of the tomatoes completely mature before it gets too cold. This summer has been chilly!

After 6 days spent in the Midwest this past week, Aaron and I were very jealous. Our in-laws have canned several batches of tomatoes and are enjoying juicy, plump tomatoes daily from their gardens. We had all but given up on our garden producing any colored tomatoes. Monday night, when Aaron went out to water and look over the garden, he called me in excitement to come check out the progress. As I peered in to the depths of the tomato plants, I saw that our tomatoes had started to change color!!! Granted, there were only about 5 tomatoes (some as small as a tear drop) that we could pick but any progress is progress!

When we first bought the plants, we were intrigued by the many kinds of tomatoes available. We ended up getting yellow pear tomatoes, Purple Russian heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, and some other types. I was thrilled to see that a few of our ripened tomatoes were the Purple Russian’s. I was wondering if they would be purple as their name suggests. Last night, I learned that they are red with a slight purplish tinge. I’m looking forward to all the different ways I can use these tomatoes…hopefully I get the chance!
