Remember my little lesson about compost not being compost until it’s composted? Where I spread fresh wood chips throughout my garden thinking it would add some goodness, and learned a bit too late that fresh wood ships suck the freakin’ nitrogen out of the soil? And I learned this, of course, because a bunch of new starts I’d just planted died a very quick death.
Except for one.
I have a survivor!
A melon start managed to hang on tight through my nitrogen sucking and the nasty early-summer weather and has now sprawled throughout about one-sixth of one of my garden areas, and is ACTUALLY PRODUCING PRODUCE! It’s grown up and become a plant! Teeny tiny melons not bunch bigger than my cherry tomatoes have emerged from their brush with death. It’s so weird to see these less-than-pint-sized striped melons coming from what I thought would never produce.
Wow. Will wonders never cease. That baby’s a survivor.
Just wait until next year when I let the nitrogen alone.
