I know, I know…I’m a dietitian and shouldn’t be talking about sugar. But nutrition aside, honey is a sweet treat that I savor on occasion! Recently, I came across a fun local business at the Proctor District’s annual Art Walk. Appropriately named, “Sweet as Can Bee Honey Farm,” this farm makes outstanding honey. Click here to check out their website.
At the Art Walk, I tried a bunch of different honeys; lavender, fireweed, wild flower, rosemary, and vanilla bean. Who knew there could be so many different kinds! I ended up buying a jar of the rosemary honey, thinking about how nice it would be to make rosemary honey glazed chicken or home made bread drizzled with honey.
The main reason I was drawn to the honey stand was because it fondly reminded me of the book “Plenty: One Man, One Woman, and a Raucous Year of Eating Locally.” In this book, a couple challenges themselves to eat only food they could buy within 100 miles of their home in Vancouver, Canada. Sugar was one of the ingredients they had to replace in their diet. I remember reading about the different kinds of honey they were able to buy, not knowing that there could be so many flavors. If you haven’t read this book, I highly encourage it! It is very quick, enjoyable, and inspiring!
Thanks for the suggestion, I am definately interested in checking this book out.
I really like this blog, and hope to see lots of future activity. Thank you for being here!

I loved that book and was disappointed that it didn’t get more attention, being overshadowed at the time by Barbara Kingsolver’s “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.” I admired their rigor, and I especially loved the description of the foraged and bartered meals that they prepared in their little cabin in the Canadian woods.
